The largest low-cost airline operating in Britain, Ryanair, has announced that it’s to cut back the number of UK flights dramatically with Stansted flights being reduced by 40%. The current 40 aircraft based at the airport will come day to 24 from October 2009.

With the hard-nosed Ryanair it’s always difficult to know how much they mean or if it’s just a negotiating ploy. But when their arch-rival easyJet agrees with them about the tax, perhaps the government should listen. Other big players like BA and Virgin are also suffering as their First and Business class numbers are hit hard and the industry is getting ever more vocal in its criticism of the latest tax hike.

Currently, passengers flying out of the UK pay £10 for each short-haul flights and up to £40 for longer trips. Later in 2009, these taxes rise to £22 for a return short trip and an eye-watering sum of up to £90 for long-haul return flights. The charges will go up again in 2010.

A family of four flying to the Caribbean, Kenya, South Africa or Thailand next winter, will pay £300 in APD. Further afield, families planning trips to Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia or Australasia will pay £340 – more than double the current rate of £40 per passenger. And that’s before they even think about the ticket price!

As might be expected, the Government is claiming that green issues lie behind the tax hike. It’s an argument that’s simply not believed by aircraft operators. Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson brands it “one of the most unjust taxes out there. There’s not a shred of evidence that the £2billion currently being raised is going towards environmental or sustainable projects.”

The Government’s claim that the move will cut carbon emissions doesn’t impress environmentalists either. They have criticised the tax for encouraging air passengers to believe that they are doing their bit for the environment, making them less likely to contribute to carbon offsetting schemes.

Ryanair’s decision will reignite fears about the future of several regional airports which are in doubt, due to a dramatic fall in passengers numbers and the number of routes being cut over the last 12 months.

Abta, the Travel Association, has raised concerns about the impact that APD will have on regional passengers who are forced to fly via London, forcing them to pay the tax twice if they are travelling with two different airlines. Premium economy passengers are also to suffer as they will pay the same level of tax as passengers flying in business or first-class. Those flying in premium economy cabins to Australia will pay £170 from November 2010 – more than double the current fee of £80.

The changes will also harm tourism to Britain, with foreign visitors forced to pay APD on the return leg of their journey.

Michael O’Leary of Ryanair also says the tax is riddled with inconsistencies as it’s not paid on cargo flights or by transfer passengers. This mean you could get two passengers sitting next to each other on a long-haul flight, one having paid a massive tax bill, the other not a penny.

He also points out that the Belgian, Dutch, Greek and Spanish government’s have dropped tourist taxes or reduced airport charges to zero to stimulate tourism and adds: “Sadly, UK traffic and tourism continue to collapse while Ryanair continues to grow traffic rapidly in those countries which welcome tourists instead of taxing them.”

While it hurts to agree with a man famed for finding every possible way to force passengers to pay more for baggage, checking-in, on-line booking fees ad nauseam, he does have a point. If other governments are trying to help tourism, why does the UK, with a prime minister constantly saying he’s doing everything possible to beat the recession, follow a course that’s causing massive damage to tourists and the airline industry?

American Airlines has had its share of troubles recently.  It has been struggling with the management of the labor unions over new contracts.  Airline traffic is down, meaning less people are using their services.  AA has also had trouble securing credit.  Now, in their first quarter profit reports, AMR Corporation, parent company of AA, indicated that they had lost nearly $375 million (or $1.35 per share) in the first quarter.

While fuel has been significantly cheaper, this has not helped AA off-set the cost of lower traffic volume.  AMR is the first of the big airline companies to report their earnings after the end of the quarter.  All the other major carriers are expected to show sharp losses in profits as well.

The sharp drop in traffic has also had another effect on the industry, which could be good for consumers.   With the U.S. in a recession, the airlines have not been able to raise their airline prices or fees.  This has caused something of a fare war between the carriers, keeping prices low.  Airlines are also offering unprecedented deals in an effort to lure back consumers.  

But, while the losses seem street, Wall Street analysts were actually expecting AMR to lose closer to $1.68 per share on revenue of approximately $4.73 billion.  Many experts are predicting that the airline industry may have hit bottom in the first quarter and that there may be brighter days to come in the future.  AMR just received funding to add two new airplanes to their fleet, which may be a good sign that credit in this industry is opening up.

Plus, with all the airline companies cutting routes or eliminating the number of flights to certain destinations combined with lower fuel costs, many industry experts expect that costs in the second quarter will be much lower than the first quarter.  It’s too early to tell, however, what impact this will have overall.  If the other airline companies’ losses are steeper than AMR, this may spell more trouble for the airline industry.

Walter Emmett Flanders (1871-1923) was a U.S. American industrialist in the machine tool and automotive industries and was an early mass production expert. This is the context in which we must view the decision last week by the US lawmakers to reaffirm the deadline for the coming into effect of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. Under this measure, US citizens will be required to have passports in order to return home by air from trips to the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada. Having agreed to extend the previous deadline for its introduction from January 2006 to January 2007, US lawmakers were in no mood for a further extension.

But while insisting on the passport requirements for air travel beginning in January 2007, the lawmakers, apparently at the last minute, entertained lobbying efforts by the cruise-ship industry to postpone the application of the requirement to cruise travellers until June 2009. This is pretty much in line with the treatment accorded border crossings by land in respect of Mexico and Canada. Clearly, trans border crossings and ocean travel are viewed by the Americans as being of lesser ranking in terms of security risks than is air travel.

Notwithstanding the lobbying efforts that must be continued at the highest political levels for similar treatment to the cruise business, it is critical that the key stakeholders of the regional tourist industry intensify their campaigns in US markets to get travellers to acquire passports. The challenge that has been presented will, I am sure, open up opportunities for even more creative means to promote our destinations, and in the process, sensitise potential visitors about the new requirement. As of now, hoteliers, tourist boards, airlines, travel agents and tour operators have been running infomercials, but there needs to be a heightening of awareness as the deadline approaches.

The Caribbean has been benefiting from the fear of terrorism in certain parts of the world since 9/11, and is generally seen as a relatively safe area for travel. Consequently, visitor arrivals in this region have recovered quickly and we are now enjoying real growth. This is even truer for the cruise business, with the Caribbean becoming dominant in that business. Jamaica has done better than the average in the growth of stopover visitor arrivals, as well as in cruise passengers. For the current calendar year, we have indeed been experiencing accelerated growth rates in both areas.

While the cruise side of our business will be further enhanced by the extended grace period granted to it, there are justifiable fears among the hoteliers that this may be partly at the expense of land-based tourism. With a projected 1.2 million stopover visitors from the USA this year and on the basis of the current level of such visitors who travel on documents other than passports, there is substantial work to be done by Jamaica in particular, to mitigate the potential damage of the bias towards the cruise business. This work will not be made easy by any lethargy by American travellers towards acquiring passports.

Large consumer goods companies like P&G and Unilever have known for some years that men’s grooming is on the rise. But the scale of this interest, says CTG’s Sonmez, is now snowballing. “I would say 10 years ago less than 10 percent of our clients were men. Today men comprise 30 percent of our client base. That’s a 300 percent rise in real terms.”

Sonmez says men typically come to CTG for dental needs. “It’s the same for women. Dental implants and teeth whitening are our most popular treatments.” That’s not too surprising when the costs are added up. Punch these numbers into a calculator says Sonmez: major dental and whitening work can cost £2,000 plus in the UK he says. “But in Turkey, the costs are closer to £500. The material quality and the brand names used are the same you would find in the UK. However our much lower running costs make it possible to offer these low prices to clients.”

My daughter was asking me about present for Father Day. I was cracking my head to help my daughter to create some special gift while at the same time she can practise her crafting skills and her right brain creativity. Here I share the seven interesting gratitude crafts for Father Day celebration.

#1 Egg puppet

Prepare a few egg shell, colorful cotton, ice cream sticks, felt, PVA adhesive for felt, magic color or makers. First step is create the puppet hair by pasting the cotton on the top of egg shell. Cut the felt into different clothing shapes such as shirt,long pants and shoes. Then glue all the felt together to create the body. Secure the egg shell on the ice cream stick with paper tape, and glue the felt body on the ice cream stick. Last on the egg shell, draw the puppet eye, nose and mouth with a smiling expression using marker.

#2 3D scrapbooking Father portrait

Prepare a few candid photos of dad, acrylic color, some sea shell, A5 size mini canvas and PVA adhesive. Color the mini canvas with acrylic, while letting it dry, sort out the sea shell that was collected from the beach. Once the canvas is dried, paste dad candid photo on the canvas, add different shapes of sea shell on it as natural designed embellishment. Then a father portrait scrapbooking is done!

#3 Father Day greeting card

Prepare a few colorful construction paper, marker, color pencil, clay and crayons. Ask your child based on his or her memories to draw daddy face on the construction paper. They can imagine daddy is eating favourite food or drink, reading newspaper etc. Ask your child to create daddy favourite food or fruits using clay, and paste them on the construction paper that drew with daddy face. Last steps is add some write on the drawing such as dad enjoy apple, or dad love reading newspaper, happy father day etc.

#4 Draw dad from memories

Prepare a A3 size drawing block, ask your child to draw daddy from his or her memories with the feeling of feeling gratitude to daddy. I believe this will be the most grateful drawing and gift to dad.

#5 Collage of Dad

Prepare a wooden based of A4 size, acrylic and some of daddy little personal collection such as air tickets, movie tickets, bus tickets, train tickets etc. Use acrylic to color the wooden based, paste the ticket collections on the wooden based. You can ask your child to help for pasting, does matter the tickets are paste in uneven shapes or style, the important thing is your child love and enjoy pasting it. Always encourage your child to make the decision on pasting. Finally do a photocopy of dad photo, and paste it at corner to create a unique collage design, write some text such as.

#6 Make a kite for dad

Hand made kite with daddy is another fun crafting activity for father day. Prepare rice paper, PVA adhesive, coconut leaf sticks, and poster color. First, find a suitable kite template from internet, print it and cut out the shapes on the rice paper. Then using PVA adhesive to glue coconut leaf sticks as the kite back bone. Let it dry for an hour. Lastly paint some abstract pattern on the kite with poster color, let it dry half an hour and your kite is ready to fly.

#7 3D Sculpture using paper clay

3D sculpture crafting is great for children imagination and creativity thinking training. Ask your child to source for the 3D sculpture material with daddy at the playground or park that near your neighbourhood. With the collections and paper clay, create a 3D sculpture of little dream house of daddy.

The most important awareness for our children while doing above crafts is the gratitude and love feeling towards dad. Hope you can create anyone of them for father day!
